Maxaquin Dosage and Administration
Use Maxaquin as directed by your doctor. The drug may be taken with or without food, with a full glass of water. Also, drink several additional glasses of water each day. Maxaquin should be taken 2 hours before or 4 hours after the following medicines: antacids containing aluminum, calcium, or magnesium; didanosine; iron salts (eg, ferrous sulfate); sucralfate; or zinc salts (eg, zinc sulfate). Maxaquin works best if it is taken at the same time each day.
Precautions
Maxaquin may cause dizziness or lightheadedness. Be carefully driving, working with machinery or doing activit which requires concetration of attention or don’t perform such activity until you make sure you ca do it safely. Avoid drinking alcohol.
Maxaquin may cause increased sensitivity to the sun. Avoid exposure to the sun. To reduce the risk of sensitivity to the sun, take Maxaquin at least 12 hours before exposure to the sun (in the evening).
Contraindications
It is not recommended to use the drug in children younger than 18 years of age.
If you plan on becoming pregnant, discuss with your doctor the benefits and risks of using Maxaquin during pregnancy. It is unknown if Maxaquin is excreted in breast milk. Do not breast-feed while taking Maxaquin.
Possible side effects
Check with your doctor if any of these most common side effects persist or become bothersome: diarrhea; headache; dizziness; nausea.
Seek medical attention immediately if any of these severe side effects occur:
severe allergic reactions (rash; hives; difficulty breathing; joint pain or swelling; pain, tingling, or numbness in the hands or feet; anxiety; bloody stools; burning sensations; confusion; convulsions; seizures; severe or continuing diarrhea; tightness in the chest; swelling of the mouth, face, lips, or tongue;severe sunburn; skin burning, redness, swelling, blisters, or itching; stomach pain/cramps; tendon pain; tremors; vaginal irritation or discharge; weakness.
Drug interaction
Tell your doctor if you are taking any other medicines, especially of:
*Typhoid live vaccine because Maxaquin may descrease its effectiveness
*Droperidol or foscarnet because Maxaquin may increase heir actions and side effects
Missed dose
If you miss a dose of Maxaquin, take it as soon as possible. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular dosing schedule. Do not take 2 doses at once.
Overdose
If overdose is suspected, contact your local poison control center or emergency room immediately.
Store
Store Maxaquin between 59 and 77 degrees F (15 and 25 degrees C). Store away from heat, moisture, and light. Do not store in the bathroom. Keep Maxaquin out of the reach of children and away from pets.
